Roadside America Two

As mentioned in my previous post called the “Roadside America”, I have exploring the back roads of United States. I found the information I needed to guide me on a website called “Road Trip USA” showing the cross-country adventures on America’s two-lane Highways. So far, I have covered three of the eleven roads. Now working on finishing up parts of road that I have touched previously. While on these roads, I also used another app called Roadside America which is a travel tools and guide to unusual attractions, tourist traps, weird vacations, and road trips.

So what is a roadside attraction? It’s a feature along the side of a road as a mean to attract tourists. The phenomenon started in early 1930’s with entrepreneurs began building businesses in the form of common objects of enormous size such as the Bluebird of Happiness advertising Vilano Beach, Florida.

I have given speech about my obsession for quirky at Horizon Unlimited, Overland Expo and have inspired several others to find them as well. Including my good friend, Sharon Faith who I have caught up with and we decided to take a day exploring some of them in St. Augustine, Florida.

1. Replica of Michelangelo’s David

Supposedly one of only two exact copies made of the famous nude statue. Apparently, it’s perfect in every details. So, there’s no need to go to Italy to see the original one.

2. The Old Senator

Giant oak tree in the parking lot of a motel. The sign notes that the tree was growing in 1513 when Ponce de Leon discovered the Fountain of Youth.

3. House inside a Redwood log

A gentleman by the name of Len Moore, took refuge in this burned out redwood tree during a storm. It’s spark a dream to build a house inside of it. It took him over four months to chisel out the interior and over a year to build.

4. Car Bumper Stallion

This mustang is made entirely from vintage 1950’s and 1960’s chrome car bumpers. The sculpture was created by metallurgist, Sean Guerrero to celebrate the Denver Broncos’ 1987 Super Bowl appearance. The sculpture weigh over a ton and nearly 20 feet long.
